Finding Your Voice in the Psalms

The Psalms are a rich collection of prayers that give voice to every season of the soul. They invite us to bring our joys, griefs, questions, hopes and longings honestly before God.

As we bring our own life experiences into the language of the Psalms, the words of Scripture come alive — inviting us into a deeper, more honest conversation with God.

Finding Your Voice in the Psalms is a 3-session prayer formation workshop that explores the biblical movement through seasons of orientation, disorientation and reorientation. Whether you've prayed the Psalms for years or are opening them for the first time, this workshop offers a way in.

Each session includes biblical teaching, guided prayer exercises and opportunities for shared reflection. Between sessions, you'll be invited to continue praying selected Psalms at home and return the following week to share your experience, ask questions and learn from one another's journey.

Session 1: The Spirituality of the Psalms (10 Oct)

Discover how ancient words become present-tense prayer. This opening session introduces the spirituality of the Psalms and the biblical movement through orientation, disorientation and reorientation. We then begin our journey by praying the Psalms of orientation as prayers of praise and worship.

Session 2: Praying Through Struggle (17 Oct)

Discover how the lament Psalms give shape, visibility and voice to grief, disappointment and confusion. As we pray these Psalms, we find the freedom to bring our honest emotions before God, and to pour out our hearts to Him in prayer.

Session 3: Praying with Renewed Hope (24 Oct)

The Psalms of reorientation remind us that renewal begins when we encounter God in the midst of our circumstances. As we pray these psalms of thanksgiving, God gently reorients our hearts, reshapes our imagination and awakens fresh hope, enabling us to pray prophetically into new possibilities, with renewed trust in His faithfulness.

The Heart Behind This Workshop

This workshop was birthed from my journey of praying through all 150 Psalms during my doctoral studies in Spiritual Formation. As I brought my own life experiences into the Psalms, I discovered that Scripture became a living conversation with God—giving voice to joy, grief, unanswered questions, anger, hope and trust in ways I had never experienced before. I still remember praying through a psalm of old age and watching my anxiety about the future transform into a settled trust in God's faithfulness.

Rooted in the biblical theology of the Psalms and shaped by my years of ministry in prayer and spiritual formation, Finding Your Voice in the Psalms is an invitation to encounter God more deeply through Scripture, find language for your own prayers, and discover your own voice in the Psalms.
